Is It Bad To Drink Alcohol After Working Out?

Beer After Exercise… Hmmm…

Beer or wine – can you have any when you are trying to live healthy?

Can you have a beer after exercise? Are there any health benefits of beer or even craft beers? It depends on who you ask and which type of alcohol you are asking about. First off, we are talking about drinking alcohol in moderation, not an entire case of beer or a bottle of wine. Second, if you are truly trying to lose weight then these might not be the best choices because they can be loaded with calories. Let’s take a look at some of the weight pros and cons of “hitting the sauce” in moderation.

Beer After Exercise: The Positives

Alcohol in moderation (key word: moderation) can have many positive health effects. Beer, for instance, has been shown to improve digestion, prevent osteoporosis, prevent diabetes, and can be heart healthy.

Beer After Exercise? Your Diet and AlcoholBeer also contains many vitamins, antioxidants, and even contains protein.

Scientists have even gone as far as to say that beer after exercise is better for you than water or Gatorade because it contains carbohydrates and protein.

These carbohydrates and proteins start to replenish the store that was lost during the workout.

Likewise, wine is loaded with antioxidants and has been attributed to a long list of health-improving benefits. For instance, science has started to paint light on how red wind can prevent diabetes, breast cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease and can help keep your heart and brain healthy!

Beer After Exercise: The Negatives

On the other hand, we all know that when not consumed in moderation alcohol can have terrible, lasting effects (think liver disease). When it comes to nutrition and weight issues the consumption of beer can cause you to gain weight.

For instance, the average light beer contains 99-100 calories, if you have 3-4 at night, that’s the equivalent to a small meal. You’re bound to gain weight if you are taking in another meal that doesn’t satiate you like real food, causing you to be hungry later on.

Another negative weight aspect of alcohol is that hard alcohol is usually mixed with sugary beverages which can cause you to gain even more weight.

Lastly, the consumption of alcohol is usually accompanied by over-eating or consuming junk food later on (think drunk munchies).

Wrap-Up

When it comes to consuming alcohol – moderation is key.

If you stick to light beers and red wine in moderation you can consume them and still maintain your weight (if you are eating healthy and exercising as well). The main reason I say to have a few beers or a glass of wine with dinner is that it increases your chances of maintaining your diet.

You must consume what you enjoy or else your nutrition plan will never be sustainable.

If allowing yourself to have a beer keeps you eating a healthy balanced diet and maintaining a healthy sustainable lifestyle, then go ahead and knock it back. On that note, beer me!
