The Happy Herbivore: Lindsay Nixon

The Happy Herbivore lifestyle

Lindsay Nixon, the Happy Herbivore, took some time to answer some questions about her view on the herbivore lifestyle and her book: Happy Herbivore Light & Lean: Over 150 Low-Calorie Recipes with Workout Plans for Looking and Feeling Great. The more you know the more you can decide how to live life on your own terms – DIY style!

Discussing the Herbivore Lifestyle

How did you get into the herbivore lifestyle?

Lindsay jumps right in, “I was a vegetarian for most of my childhood but lost my way in my teens from peer pressure. A serious health scare brought me back to my vegetarian diet in my early 20’s. The more I read and learned about health and nutrition…

I saw the benefits and protections offered by a whole foods plant-based diet. So I made the leap from vegetarian and have never looked or felt better!

Lindsay then went on to say that there are so many health benefits of living the herbivore lifestyle that there are tons and tons of books on the benefits, “We’d be here for months if I listed them all. Just incredible [sic].” Check this out for more information on the herbivore lifestyle.

The Happy Herbivore: Lindsay NixonI was curious as to if there are any negative aspects of living the herbivorous lifestyle from nutrient or protein deficiency.

I’ve heard rumors of some negative aspects but she was clear to point out that there weren’t any negative effects, “Only the upside of feeling amazing and having great health, as well as reversing Western disease like heart disease, obesity, and type-two diabetes, as well as most cancers!”

Sounds pretty healthy to me, and if you want a beginners course in the herbivore lifestyle check out the Herbie 101 Series full of tons of great information!

What’s the biggest misunderstanding about the herbivore lifestyle?

Lindsay then provided an expanded answer to my previous questions about the negative effects of being a herbivore by explaining that many people are always curious as to how they will get their protein if their diet is plant-based. Will they get it from protein shakes and bars?

Do they need to take supplements? These are very common misunderstandings that shadow the herbivore lifestyle. But Lindsay explained,

People always wonder where one gets their protein if they are vegan or vegetarian. Here’s the secret: protein is in all foods! Even kale and bananas and rice! You could eat nothing but potatoes all day and still exceed your protein needs.

You have a new book coming out, tell us a little about it?

Lindsay is a busy woman, from running her blog to writing multiple books to do the whole PR push for this new release. This has her constantly learning and experimenting with the herbivore lifestyle.

She explained that the Happy Herbivore Light & Lean is her 4th book in the Happy Herbivore. She went on to explain a little about the book, “This cookbook follows my same, health-focus cooking style, but this book also takes a full-body approach and includes things like workout plans so you can feel and look your best.”

This book provides us not only with a way to live a healthy lifestyle but also a way to build up your strength and muscle! I’m quite the carnivorous type myself, but it sounds like this book can offer some healthy alternatives if you’re trying to add variety to your diet.

I was curious from where she drew the main concepts of this book, considering she has already published three prior books.

It seems like this lady doesn’t run out of great ideas to get and stay healthy, she explained, “The recipes were inspired by my meal plan service (www.getmealplans.com). I centered the recipes on the concept of caloric density… more food, fewer calories, very filling. I also pulled in my experiences as a personal trainer for the body/fit/lean section.”

What is the biggest thing you want people to take away from the book?

Of course, I had to ask this question. I wanted to know exactly what the heart and soul of this book were about, dwindle it all down to one statement.

Lindsay said this book all comes down to one simple fact, “That eating healthy is easy, delicious and very doable on a daily basis and that you can work on fitness 5 minutes a day in your own home without expensive equipment or having to go to the gym.” I find this to be very true as well, you all know that I push at-home workouts very hard and she hits this point, spot-on.

You can lose weight and stay healthy from the comforts of your own home.
