Blast your muscles

Exercise is a great way to look better, feel better, and to improve your overall health.

However, if what you’re after is the Hulk-like physique of a Mr. Universe hopeful, there are few better choices than Crossfit and classic strength training.

While Crossfit employs a variety of WOD (Workout of the Day) options, here are five of the top exercises for helping you build muscle.

1. Barbell Thrusters

Barbell thrusters largely target the muscles of your lower body, including the quadriceps, groin, hamstrings, and hip flexors, as well as the shoulder muscles.

Use an overhand grip to grab your barbell a little wider than shoulder-width. Pull the barbell into position so that your elbows are towards the ground and your palms towards the ceiling. Squat so your thighs are parallel to the floor, and then explode out, thrusting your hips outward as you move the barbell above your head. Carefully bring the barbell back down to your shoulders and repeat.

2. Box Jumps

Box jumps help build stronger hamstrings while also hitting your adductors, abductors, glutes, calves, and quadriceps.

Set a 12 to 24-inch box or step securely on the ground in front of you. Swing your arms behind you as you place your body in a short squat position. Jump, focusing the momentum through your ankles, knees, and hips to propel yourself onto the platform. Make sure you land with your knees bent to help absorb some of the shocks, and then step down off the box one leg at a time before repeating.

3. Kettlebell Swings

Build muscle kettlebell

Kettlebell swings work both your quadriceps and your shoulders, along with your glutes, calves, and lower back.

These are great to build your core and overall strength.

Position yourself over the kettlebell with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees and push your butt backward as you grab the kettlebell with one hand. Forcefully swing the kettlebell between your legs, and use your hips to reverse the direction and force it back out. Repeat for your desired amount of reps, and then switch to your other arm.

4. Handstand Push-ups

When push-ups are no longer enough on their own, this takes them to the next level by combining them with a handstand. These push-ups torch your shoulders and triceps, providing a uniquely strenuous workout for muscles that are often otherwise overlooked.

Place your back to the wall. Bend over and place your hands on the floor about shoulder-width apart. Kick your legs back and propel yourself into a handstand position with your legs and your arms extended fully. Inhale as you drop your head towards the floor, almost letting it touch before pushing yourself back up on the exhale. Repeat for as many reps as you can handle.

Just make sure you don’t end up with a faceful of floor.

5. Filthy Fifty

When looking for a serious workout set that will make your muscles burn in a good way, try the Filthy Fifty. This set includes 10 different exercises with 50 reps performed of each (be VERY careful to watch your form as your fatigue to avoid injury).

These exercises include jumping pull-ups, double under, box jumps, burpees, kettlebell swings, wall balls, walking lunge steps, back extensions, knees to elbows, and push presses. If you’re a beginner, consider cutting the reps in half to 25 or lower, and then gradually work your way up to 50.

Wrap-Up

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned veteran, performing these exercises can help increase your metabolism, burn fat, build muscle, and make it possible for you to gain the impressive physique you’ve always wanted.

However, as with any new exercise routine, you should always work with your doctor to make sure that you’re healthy enough to take on these extreme workouts.

After all, it’s no good having the body of the Hulk, if you have to kill yourself to get it.

You will also need proper nutrition and supplementation to build muscle. Personally, I like to supplement using products from Progenex, however, if you are looking to save money products from Amazon can be just as useful.

The key is to take care of your body, and it will take care of you.
