Getting Fit Doesn’t Have to be Expensive
There are a seemingly endless number of ways to get fit these days. Whether you join a mega gym or head to a small studio for personalized training, it’s easy to shell out big bucks to get yourself in shape.
Here are six ways to get fit without spending a ton of cash
Not everyone can — and not everyone wants to — spend so much money to maintain fitness and health. Fortunately, there are many ways to exercise without breaking the bank.
1. Get Moving Outdoors
Whether your neighborhood is lined with sidewalks or your urban apartment is near a city park, you can probably find a place to work out outside.
It’s easy to figure out what to do here, too: simply add daily walks, jogs, or runs to your routine for cardiovascular exercise without a big piece of gym equipment.
For an added bit of inspiration, try to recruit a family member or neighborhood friend to join your free workouts. Having a friend by your side has been shown to improve your accountability, inspire you to try harder, and even make you look forward to running.
2. Build a Body-Weight Resistance Routine
Unless you’re lucky enough to live somewhere sunny and warm year-round — we’re looking at you, California — you simply will not be able to walk or run outdoors every day. Plus, you might want to add a little bit of strength training into your cardio routine.
You can use a tabletop as a surface for incline push-ups or use an extra-large door jamb for pull-ups, for example.
3. Take Advantage of Community Activities
You know from the get-go that a local gym or fitness studio will charge you for entry. But your local park might have free recreational leagues and activities that can help keep you in shape.
As for the former, you might just find sports like adult kickball and softball help you sweat and widen your social circle, which can have much the same effect as exercise: friends make you more confident and less stressed, among other benefits.
4. Make Social Activities Active
What’s your go-to hangout spot with friends? Is it the local coffee shop, the corner bar, or your very own couch? Try mixing things up to get some exercise in on your next friend date by going for a hike or bike ride together.
It’s easy to make get-togethers active without spending any more money than you would have in the first place. Remember those coffees we already mentioned? Take them to go so that you can walk, talk, and get a boost of caffeine. Plan a night out at a club with dancing rather than at the corner pub.
You can even forego your Netflix date to browse the local mall which, of course, requires a bit of movement.
No matter what, incorporating activity into your regular routine will keep you in shape without costing anything.
5. Try an Office Workout
You can also incorporate exercise into your work routine, especially if you sit at a desk all day long. While you chat on the phone, type, or go through paperwork, you can perform little exercises that boost your cardiovascular or physical strength while you’re on the job.
For example, you can straighten and hold one or both legs for 5 to 10 seconds under your desk, and voila: you’ve worked your legs while working away.
6. Search YouTube or Pinterest for Ideas
Finally, you have to remember that you’re not the first person who wants to work out without breaking the bank. Others have paved the way and, in the process, have shared their successful at-home workout plans with the internet world. All you have to do is log onto a site like YouTube or Pinterest and search for workout routines.
